Action Type: Single Action O/U Derringer with Bottom Break Barrels
Markings: The top barrel rib is marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, N.Y. / ELLIOT’S PATENT DEC 12TH 1865”. The left side of the grip frame and the underside of the bottom barrel are marked “3351”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a short blade fixed to the barrel rib. The rear sight is “U” groove in the barrel hinge.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth rosewood on a bird’s head grip frame. The grips show oil staining. There is a small crack at the bottom of the left grip. There are a few light scratches in the grips and a few small dings in the right grip. The right grip is in about Fine condition and the left grip is in about Fair to Good condition.
Type of Finish: The derringer has been sandblasted to remove its original finish, except for the trigger, which appears to be blued, and the hammer, which appears to be case colored. There is light scroll engraving on the sides of the barrels and frame.
Finish Originality: There are no signs that this derringer has ever been refinished.
Bore Condition: The bores are dark with shallow rifling and spots of moderate erosion scattered throughout the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 0% of its metal finish. The surfaces have been sandblasted, and there is also light pitting in the barrel assembly. There are deep dings and bruises in the underside of the barrels, and small dings in the top rib of the barrel, the underside of the frame and the front strap. The hammer checkering is sharp. The barrel pivot screw is distressed. The markings are clear except for the serial number on the bottom of the barrel which is partially obscured by erosion. This derringer rates in about Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The barrel lockup is solid. The hammer has a 1/8^th cock safety and the manual extractor is present and working. The firing pin moves up on one cocking of the hammer and down on the next to fire the barrels alternately. The action works correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Remington acquired the rights to Dr. William Elliot’s patent and produced over-under double-barreled derringers from 1866 until 1935, in several rimfire calibers, the most common of which was .41 rimfire. There were 3 trademarks — 'E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, NY', 'Remington Arms Co.', and 'Remington-UMC', and only the Late Type 1 were serial numbered in sequence – everything that came after were made in batches. The derringer continued to be marked Remington Arms-UMC until production ceased in 1935. The popularity of these little guns was never a question and was carried over into TV shows and movies depicting the late 19th century and early 20th century. Richard Boone carried one as Paladin in “Have Gun Will Travel” and John Wayne carried one in both “Big Jake” and “The Shootist”. This derringer is marked with a E. Remington & Sons address on the top of the barrel rib with an 1865 patent date, identifying it as a Type 1 Late Production, or Model 2 2^nd Variation depending on which reference one chooses. The derringer is in about Good to Very Good condition with none of its original finish remaining. The bores are dark with shallow rifling and spots of moderate erosion. However, the barrel lockup is solid and everything works including the firing pin that automatically selects one barrel and then the next. This derringer is factory engraved will present well, and the collectors are sure to express their interest.

We always combine on shipping to save you as much as we can. You can generally assume it will be full shipping charge on the first item, 1/2 on the second, 1/3 on the third, etc. Exceptions only arise when the items are going to different locations (different licenses), or when they are exceptionally large, heavy or valuable and cannot be combined.
